OHIO

Center for Leadership in Education

The Center for Leadership in Education was founded as a private non-profit organization in 1992. The Center was created to be a catalyst for change through the systemic restructuring of schools. The Center was set apart from any other school, district or college or government organization so that it could have the objectivity of an outsider and the insight of an insider so that it can follow through with its educational transformation activities.

KnowledgeWorks Foundation

The KnowledgeWorks Foundation works across Ohio and is committed to furthering universal access to high-quality educational opportunities for individuals to achieve success and for the betterment of society. The KnowledgeWorks Foundation's mission is to increase the number and diversity of people who value and access education, by creating and improving educational opportunity at pre-kindergarten through high school and post-high school institutions, and through community organizations.

Partnership for Education in Ashtabula County (PEAC)

PEAC's mission is to support initiatives and promote partnerships that enable Ashtabula County schools to achieve excellence. Its goal is to have the full participation of the Ashtabula County districts/schools to be rated as Excellent as defined by the Ohio Department of Education. PEAC will accomplish its goal by strengthening educational achievement and support authentic commitment to school improvement. PEAC's program will enrich community capacity building, revitalize the community and increase educational expectations for ALL children.

OREGON

Portland Schools Foundation

The Portland Schools Foundation is an independent, community-based organization that mobilizes ideas, leadership, political support and money necessary to ensure a first-rate education for every child, in every public school, in every Portland neighborhood. The Schools Foundation works in three primary ways to help the community and school district. These are investing in teachers, building civic and political will and mobilizing the community.

PENNSYLVANIA

A+ Schools: Pittsburgh's Community Alliance for Public Education

A+ Schools is a community advocate for improving student achievement by supporting an action agenda shaped by the issues of high standards, quality teaching, leadership accountability, financial responsibility and community involvement. This organization's purpose is to regularly report to the public and engage a range of community partners in the effort to improve the educational outcomes of public school students. A+ Schools is an independent organization focused on improving student achievement that will seek to ensure objective oversight and steady support for public school improvement initiatives.

Lancaster Foundation for Educational Enrichment

The Lancaster Foundation for Educational Enrichment was established in 1989 by an insightful group of civic leaders. The Foundation promotes educational excellence in the School District of Lancaster by strengthening community participation and by providing support for initiatives not funded by current tax revenues. The Foundation ensures excellence in the District by encouraging creative teaching, student development and enhanced community/school partnerships.

Philadelphia Education Fund

The Philadelphia Education Fund (the Ed Fund), an independent non-profit organization, has been working to improve the educational achievement of under-served youth in the Philadelphia region for the past two decades. In 1985, the Philadelphia corporate, foundation and university communities began a bold experiment through the creation of PATHS/PRISM: The Philadelphia Partnership for Education, with a mission to provide resources and support for classroom innovation in the city's public schools. The Philadelphia Schools Collaborative, with the avowed purpose of institutionalizing systemic change within the schools, was founded shortly afterward and began working in conjunction with PATHS/PRISM to advocate for and facilitate school reform. These two outstanding organizations, with a rich history of helping to shape policy and practice, merged in 1995, to become the Philadelphia Education Fund. Currently, the Philadelphia Education Fund's programs span the areas of regional partnerships, research, civic engagement, direct service and whole school reform/professional development/curriculum reform.

Chester Education Foundation

The Chester Education Foundation (CEF) is a Local Education Fund (LEF) created in 1988 by a consortium of local and state leaders including Widener University, West Chester University, the PA Department of Education, the Commission on Higher Education, United Way of Southeastern Delaware County, the Pew Charitable Trusts, Sun Company, Scott Paper Company, Boeing and others. CEF's mission is to support educational excellence and promote community revitalization in the Chester Upland School District. They seek to achieve their mission by increasing the involvement of community citizens in the planning and delivery of our services; strengthening partnerships with the Chester Upland School District; collaborating with other community organizations; seeking resources to increase the quality of education and community life; and demonstrating accountability.

The Consortium for Public Education

The Consortium is a unique third-party convener, broker and catalyst dedicated to making a difference in the lives of all children and their communities.

PUERTO RICO

Puerto Rico Community Foundation

The Puerto Rico Community Foundation came to life in April 1985, born out of an idea that arose during a forum sponsored by the National Puerto Rican Coalition. The idea-to establish a philanthropic organization on the island-was endorsed by the Ford Foundation, which subsequently commissioned a study to prove the viability and appropriateness of such an organization in Puerto Rico and found that there was substantial support. Thus, the Puerto Rico Community Foundation (PRCF, or FCPR for the Spanish acronym) established itself as a non-profit philanthropic organization whose purpose is to support processes of change in the communities of Puerto Rico. They collaborate with community-based organizations that are interested in promoting well-being and quality of life in their communities. Their particular programmatic interest is focused on education, community development, financial development, development of social interest housing and philanthropy.

SOUTH CAROLINA

The Alliance for Quality Education

The Alliance for Quality Education, established in 1985, is an independent non-profit organization dedicated to the goal of improving public education in Greenville County. Every school, every classroom.

The Charleston Education Network

CEN focuses on causing fundamental, systemic changes to ensure that every child is given a high quality education and to accelerate the rate of improvement in our public schools. CEN activities include promoting effective School Board functioning through state-of-the-art training in governance; facilitating leadership and management development for senior district personnel; helping parents transfer children from chronically low-performing schools; working for legislation to reform school district governance; and providing data and analysis on educational performance to be a voice for improved student achievement.

The Education Foundation

Since 1995, The Education Foundation has worked to build the coalitions, mobilize the resources and advocate the changes necessary in our community to prepare all students for the careers of the future. Specifically, the Foundation is working to increase the number and quality of high school graduates in the region by leveraging connections between the business community and schools and facilitating the adoption of proven reform strategies.

SOUTH DAKOTA

TENNESSEE

HC*EXCELL

HC*EXCELL is an independent 501(c) (3) non-profit foundation, governed by an appointed board of directors for the purpose of promoting excellence in education and achievement in Hamblen County. The board, made up of leaders from education, business and the community, has provided sustained, innovative leadership since its inception in 1990. The foundation solicits financial resources to build and maintain a permanent endowment for education. Income from the endowment is allocated for professional development, classroom materials and equipment, scholarships and creative educational projects.

HC*EXCELL encourages community engagement and is a vehicle through which visionary and motivated educators find support to promote quality education. The Foundation also works on local, state and national initiatives for quality education.

Public Education Foundation

Over the last few years the Public Education Foundation (PEF) has partnered with the Hamilton County Schools to bring tremendous investment into the community to improve public education, and it's beginning to work. From dramatic reading gains in urban elementary schools, to more challenging and engaging high schools, to better trained teachers and leaders& things are looking up. In 2001, PEF began two major multi-million dollar initiatives aimed at transforming nine urban elementary schools and reinventing all 17 of Hamilton County's high schools. These five-year initiatives joined existing long-term programs in leadership development, highly effective teaching and community engagement.

TEXAS

Austin Voices for Education and Youth

Austin Voices for Education and Youth was founded in July 2003, and is a merger between two existing efforts. Community IMPACT! Austin, was a non-profit organization committed to providing opportunities for young people while strengthening neighborhoods. Austin Voices for Public Schools was a school reform group that was in the process of becoming a non-profit organization. Austin Voices for Education and Youth represents an effort to blur the lines between the learning that young people do in schools and in communities, and to create stronger links between the local public schools and the community they serve.

Citizens for Educational Excellence, Inc.

Citizens for Educational Excellence is a non-profit local education fund in Corpus Christi, Texas. Founded in 2003 as a project of the Corpus Christi Chamber of Commerce Foundation, Citizens for Educational Excellence is a catalyst to bring people, information and resources together to promote public education for our community. Currently, Citizens for Educational Excellence works with six public school districts in Corpus Christi: Calallen ISD, Corpus Christi ISD, Flour Bluff ISD, London ISD, Tuloso-Midway ISD and West Oso ISD.

Houston A+ Challenge

Houston A+ has been working to support and transform public schools in the Houston area since 1997. The mission of The Houston A+ Challenge is to promote an academically rich and purposeful education for more of our children and to demonstrate how such an education could become possible for all our children. A not-for-profit public, private partnership, the Houston A+ Challenge directs the largest single sum of private money ever dedicated to public school reform in the Greater Houston area. The Challenge develops and funds school programs, professional development and leadership institutes to promote higher academic achievement by all students using the principles of Whole School Reform.

RISD Tomorrow

RISD Tomorrow's mission is to promote enrichment, innovation and excellence in education throughout the Richardson Independent School District. RISD Tomorrow's goal is to develop supportive community relationships and to provide supplemental funds for programs in the district that do the following: allow all students to achieve academic excellence; develop individual and civic responsibility; enjoy a safe learning environment and be taught by the most highly qualified staff, recognize, reward and support staff for exemplary teaching and innovative efforts; and recognize students for, and support students in, their innovative efforts and in their future educational pursuits.

WASHINGTON

Alliance for Education

Alliance for Education, a non-profit organization, exists to help ensure the academic success of all students in Seattle Public Schools. Every child can achieve. Setting high expectations is key. Students who achieve at high levels are more likely to graduate and be better equipped for successful lives.

Established in 1995, Alliance for Education is an independent voice and external catalyst for excellence in Seattle's public schools. By sharing the goal of all kids achieving, we actively work as partners with the school district to identify needs, develop initiatives and channel private resources toward programs that ensure the academic achievement of all students.

Guided by a broad-based coalition of business, civic, education and philanthropic community leaders, Alliance for Education has helped generate more than $90 million in charitable support to Seattle Public Schools. Each year, these community-generated resources bring additional training, materials, expertise and innovation into our schools-supporting the belief that all children can achieve.

WEST VIRGINIA

The Education Alliance

The Education Alliance is West Virginia's statewide public education fund. This non-profit organization's mission is to create positive, systemic change in public education. The vision of The Education Alliance is higher student achievement for every child in West Virginia.

The Education Alliance collaborates with business, labor, community and education partners to advocate for public education improvements to support the goals of West Virginia: A Vision Shared, the state's economic development plan.

WISCONSIN

Foundation for Madison's Public Schools

The Foundation for Madison's Public Schools is an independent, community non-profit organization dedicated to sustaining and extending the excellence of Madison's public schools by providing funding to support creative initiatives which cannot be funded through the regular school budget. The Foundation raises funds that will benefit children in Madison's Public Schools long into the future, makes grants to creative and innovative projects that are outside the regular school budget, and develops partnerships between the schools and community groups throughout Madison.
